Science Advisory Board
The Science Advisory Board for Leiomyosarcoma Support & Research Foundation is a well-rounded group of dedicated volunteers who have extensive knowledge of leiomyosarcoma and expertise in either the medical, pharmaceutical, research or patient support professions.
Sandra D’Angelo MD
Dr. D’Angelo is an attending physician in Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Sarcoma Oncology Program, specializing in immunotherapeutics. She is a member of the Immunotherapeutics Clinic (ITC), which designs and conducts early clinical trials using investigational therapies.
Gina D’Amato MD
Dr. D’Amato is Associate Professor of Medicine in Sarcoma Medical Oncology and Assistant Director of Clinical Research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in Miami, Florida. She specializes in soft tissue sarcomas.
Jerad Gardner MD
Dr. Gardner is an anatomical and clinical pathologist who specializes in bone and soft tissue sarcomas at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. He trained under Dr. Sharon Weiss, a world renowned expert in bone and soft tissue sarcoma pathology. Dr. Gardner is also a Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.
Suzanne George MD
Dr. George is an oncologist and researcher at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. She is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Clinical Director, Center for Sarcoma and Bone Oncology.
Matt Hemming MD, PhD
Dr. Hemming is an oncology physician and Instructor of Medicine with Dana Farber Cancer Institute’s sarcoma program. He was awarded the 2017 Young Investigators Award at ASCO. His research interests are basic and translational research, specializing in leiomyosarcoma.
Isis Kanevsky PhD
Isis Kanevsky is an immunologist that leads a team supporting in vivo experiments for bacterial and viral vaccine, and anti-infective research programs at Pfizer. Prior to joining Pfizer, Isis was at Virginia Tech as an associate professor with tenure focused on investigation of host-pathogen interactions using in-vitro and in-vivo cell-culture and animal models. Isis was awarded The 2012 Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Technology (PECASE) – highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers in the early stages of their independent careers. Currently, Isis is herself battling newly diagnosed leiomyosarcoma of retroperitoneal origin.
Dr. Sara Watson PhD
Sara Watson earned her PhD in Interdisciplinary Biosciences from University College London and the Francis Crick Institute, where her research focused on epithelial stem cell biology and T cell immunology. She has previously worked with Genentech pharma in early oncology drug discovery.
Dr. Alex Lazar MD, PhD
Dr. Lazar is a Professor, Department of Pathology, and Director of the Selective (Soft Tissue) Pathology Fellowship Training Program, Division of Pathology/Lab Medicine at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
Matt van de Rijn MD, PhD
Dr. van de Rijn is a Professor of Pathology and a Surgical Pathologist at the Stanford University Medical Center. His laboratory research focuses on molecular analysis of human soft tissue tumors (sarcomas) with an emphasis on leiomyosarcoma. He is currently studying the molecular subtypes of leiomyosarcoma and the presence of circulating tumor DNA. He is an esteemed speaker at the LMSDR conferences.
